Research
Interests
My research clusters into two primary areas of work.  One major research program has developed and applied the Functional Theory of Political Campaign Discourse.  We investigated American presidential primary TV spots, direct mail advertising, debates, webpages, and news coverage of the primary; American general election TV spots, direct mail advertising, debates, webpages, and news coverage.  We have analyzed US Senate and House spots, gubernatorial spots and Senate, gubernatorial, and mayoral debates.  Research has investigated news coverage of Senate, gubernatorial, and mayoral campaigns.  Studies have investigated presidential TV spots in South Korea and Taiwan and political leaders’ debates in many countries, including Australia, Canada, Germany, Israel, South Korea, Spain, Taiwan, the Ukraine, and the United
Kingdom.  We have also studied news coverage of elections in Australia, Canada, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and the United Kingdom.  I have also tested Petrocik’s Issue Ownership Theory and Peterson’s Functional Federalism Theory.
A second major research program investigates rhetorical theory and criticism.  I have written on the rhetorical theories of Plato, Aristotle, Isocrates, George Campbell, and Kenneth Burke.  I have also articulated a contemporary theory of invention of rhetorical discourse.  Most of my work in rhetorical criticism concerns image repair and crisis communication, resulting in my theory of image repair discourse.  My rhetorical criticism includes numerous analyses of image repair discourse, including my book Accounts, Excuses, and Apologies, and my book with
Joe Blaney, The Clinton Scandals and the Politics of Image Restoration.
In 1990, I received the Daniel Rohrer Award for Research in Argumentation (with
Pamela J. Benoit).  I received this award again in 2003 (with Glenn Hansen and Rebecca Verser).
My book Accounts, excuses, and apologies (1995) was selected as an Outstanding Academic
Book by Choice.  I am ranked as the most productive scholar in communication during 20022006 and ranked as the second most productive scholar publishing in influential communication journals from 1999-2004.  During 2008, two of my articles were among the nine most cited articles published in Communication Monographs.
